October 21, 1999 GA-COMO Background n GSU is a large urban university with approximately 24,000 full and part-time students n Pullen Library is the primary campus library; smaller libraries include the Law Library and the Instructional Technology Center

October 21, 1999 GA-COMO Why Paw Print? n Printing expenses were growing beyond budgeted funds n University labs and libraries were getting eaten alive by wasteful printing –reams & reams of paper –expensive toner cartridges n Needed a way to limit certain stations for GSU patrons

October 21, 1999 GA-COMO Paw Print Basics n Each student who wants to print in the labs or in the library must have a login ID. n Student campus email account also serves as their Paw Print account. n Paw Print account allots 150 free prints per semester; once this limit is exceeded the cost is 5 cents per page

October 21, 1999 GA-COMO Paw Print Basics (cont) n What about non-GSU patrons? –Must generate a temporary ID in order to print –Can add value to ID in increments of 20 or 100 prints –ID is valid for 48 hours –ID is restricted for use only on certain workstations

October 21, 1999 GA-COMO Paw Print Basics (cont) n What about poor quality prints, etc.? –No cash refunds can be given –If a print is illegible or not usable for some other reason, we can credit the user’s account

October 21, 1999 GA-COMO Types of logins for the system n Students –Pawprint account; typically something like gs12rab –If they don’t need to print we can sign them on with libtemp2.lib n Faculty –Faculty.lib allows free printing

October 21, 1999 GA-COMO Types of logins (cont) n Non-GSU patrons –libtemp (does not allow printing) –Temp ID (e.g. T0101.tmp) n Secure.lib (is used in the event that someone has done everything correct but still cannot login)

October 21, 1999 GA-COMO What equipment was required? n PCOUNTER Station –Serves as a printing counter and queue monitor. –Minimum: 80486 with 8MB RAM. Recommended: Low-end Pentium 80 MB hard drive –Network Adapter and Port –Approximate Cost: $400-$1000

October 21, 1999 GA-COMO Equipment (cont) n Cash Receptor Unit –Collects cash and sends data to the cash receptor station –Connects to the Cash Receptor Station –Approximate Cost: $1000

October 21, 1999 GA-COMO Equipment (cont) n Cash Receptor Station –Reads amount from unit and deposits pages to their account –Minimum: 80486 with 16MB RAM 80 MB hard drive –Network Adapter and Port –Approximate Cost: $400

October 21, 1999 GA-COMO Advantages Disadvantages n Causes patrons to think before they print n Saves paper and toner for the library n Allows us to keep non-GSU patrons from monopolizing computers n Students think it is a hassle to require an account to print n Can cause patron and staff frustration n Dependent on several servers not under the Library’s control

October 21, 1999 GA-COMO Conclusions n Paw Print is an effective, but imperfect system for recovering printing costs. n The system is probably most suitable for larger institutions due to the level of support required from the computer center.
