1 Letter to The Times April 30, 2007 Penny drops Sir, Giles Smith (Notebook, April 26) discusses the uselesness of pennies and the 6.5 billion of them that seem to be missing. My friend Pippa and I organised a copper hunt at school last term, where each class collected as many 1p and 2p pieces as it could. (The class with the most won a prize.) Everyone searched in jars, under cushions and in cars. Relatives, neighbours and friends all seemed happy to donate their coppers.Notebook, April 26 Altogether we collected 39,000 coins and raised £565.75 for Great Ormond Street Hospital’s children’s charity. Coppers could be a gold mine for charities if lots of schools and clubs did the same. And the Royal Mint would get some of its pennies back.
