3 What is Mission of Scouting? The mission of Scouting is to ・・・  c c c contribute to the education of young people ・・・  t t t through a value system based on the Scout Promise and Law ・・・  h h h help build a better world ・・・ self- fulfilled ・・・ constructive role in society

4 The mission of scouting is achieved by  involving them throughout their formative years in a non-formal educational process  using a specific method that makes each individual the principal agent of his or her development as a self-reliant, supportive, responsible and committed person  assisting them to establish a value system based upon spirituals as expressed in the Promise and Law

5 The mission statement adopted in Durban  in Durban (1999), the world Scout Conference adopted a mission statement  result of a long collective process undertaken at the Oslo (1996)  in Thessaloniki (2002), a vision for Scouting was adopted based on the mission  The strategy is to implement the mission

6 Vision We see Scouting ・・・  influential, value based, educational movement  as attracting and retaining more and more young people  attractive to adults, women and men  dynamic, innovative movement (adopted in Thessaloniki in 2002) (adopted in Thessaloniki in 2002)

7 Strategic priorities  Youth Involvement – revitalizing the Scout Method  Adolescents – supporting their transition to adulthood  Girls and Boys, Women and Men – respecting differences, promoting equality and sharing responsibility  Reaching Out – breaking down barriers  Volunteers in Scouting – new approaches to broaden the base  An Organization for 21 st Century – flexible, lean, innovative and participatory  Scouting’s Profile – strengthen communications, partnership and resources

9 The fundamental principle of scouting Constitution and By-Laws of the WOSM  Definition – voluntary, non-political, educational movement for young people, open to all  Purpose – contribute to the development of young people  Principles – Duty to God, Duty to others, Duty to self  Promise and law  Method – progressive self-education, promise and law, learning by doing, membership of small group

10 Contribution to the education of young people  Definition – a life long process, the continuous development of a person’s capacities, as an induvidual, as a member of society  The four pillars of education – leaning to know, leaning to do, leaning to live together, leaning to be  Educational Agents – formal education, informal education, non-formal education

11 Through a system of progressive self-education: scout method  progressive self-education  a system  elements of the scout method – promise and law, leaning by doing, patrol (team) system, symbolic framework, personal progression, nature, adult support

12 Based upon a value system : adherence to the promise and law and principle of scouting  a value is something fundamental  for young people, scouting’s values are expressed in the promise and law  for the movement as a whole, the values are expressed in the principles
