Pineal Gland ~ found in vertebrates; part of endocrine system 1.Produces serotonin, a hormone that affects the modulation of wake/sleep patterns and seasonal photoperiodic functions 2.Found in lamprey - primitive vertebrate. Not found in alligator – lost in evolution Frog

Limbic System Paleomammalian brain A complex set of brain structures that lies on both sides of the thalamus, right under the cerebrum. 1.Collection of structures from the telencephalon, diencephalon and mesencephalon. 2.Includes the hippocampus, amygdala, anterior thalamic nuclei, septum, habenula, limbic cortex and fornix. 3.Supports a variety of functions, including emotion, behavior, motivation and long term memory, and olfaction. 4.Primarily responsible for our emotional life. 5.Critical role in the formation of memories.
