His family and relatives owned slaves. He did not approve of it, and wrote a powerful novel about it. He attended school in Hannibal, Missouri. Shortly after his father’s death he left school & was apprenticed to a local printer. In 1850, he got a job with the Hannibal Journal. He also worked as a riverboat pilot. He grew up in Hannibal, Missouri, a large town on the banks of the Mississippi River. He loved fishing, swimming, and dreaming up adventures for his gang of friends.
