Roxana Marsh Characterization by Jim Smith, Ph.D., IDEM & Dan Sparks, U.S. FWS
2
Roxana Marsh Characterization Purpose - To determine the chemical, physical and toxicological characteristics... Goals - Collect data of sufficient quality and quantity to: –Determine if Remediation is required; –If Remediation is required, have sufficient data to make decisions on scope and extent; –Develop Restoration Plan for Marsh
4
Scope of Work for Characterization of Roxana Marsh Grand Calumet River Restoration Fund Council August 2001
5
Roxana Marsh Characterization Review of Previous Sampling and Analyses HNTB, 1989,1991 - probes of marsh give rough estimate of sediment depth and volume; URS Greiner Woodward Clyde, 1999 - Surface & Core samples for Chemistry & Toxicity
7
Sampling Surficial and Core Sample - maxium of 60 samples from up to 20 locations Utility Survey to identify pipelines, utilities Field Sampling & Analyses Plan –Sampling, Health & Safety, Quality Assurance/Quality Control
8
Characterization - Horizontal & Vertical Control - Chemical Analyses –Analyses for PCBs, Organochlorine Pesticides, PAHs, Mercury, Metals, Oil & Grease, Total Organic Carbon, Acid volatile sulfides/simultaneously extracted metals, grain size –Reporting Limits –QA/QC Requirements
9
Characterization - Toxicity Analysis –28-day survival and growth test using Hyalella azteca (or other appropriate organism) –USGS, BRD Columbia, Mo - Data Validation - Reports, Schedules, Coordination
