New Graduation Rule

Why Do We Need a New Rule? New GPS Math in 2008 Higher expectations, value of diploma College and work-ready requirements Special ed diploma is a dead-end Need one diploma, with supports American Diploma Project

What Issues Must Be Addressed? Tiered diploma or one diploma Common core for all students High school credit in middle school Impact on testing (GHSGT, EOCT, cut score decisions) Georgia Virtual School/online credits

What Issues Must Be Addressed? Requirements for: Mathematics English/Language Arts Science Social Studies Foreign Language Health/PE Career Tech Electives Advisement

Proposed Changes Requirements for Mathematics All students must complete 4 units of mathematics, through Math 3 or higher Eliminate the Core Math sequence EOCTs in first two years – progress monitoring Support classes, interventions for all

Proposed Changes Requirements for English/Language Arts All students must complete 4 units of English English 1, 2, 3 required of all; English 4 (options) EOCTs in ELA 1 and 2 (conventions and reading) – progress monitoring

Proposed Changes Requirements for Science All students must complete 3 units 1 full unit of biology/AP required (EOCT) 1 unit of a physical science required (EOCT) (chemistry/AP, physics/AP, or physical science) 1 unit of an earth science required (Earth Systems or Environmental Science) or an AP course can be substituted

Proposed Changes Requirements for Social Studies All students must complete 3 units Required Courses: World History (EOCT) US History (EOCT) Government (1/2 unit) Economics (1/2 unit, EOCT)

Related Issues Highly qualified teachers (availability, certification) Teacher/administrator training, support Testing costs Support for struggling students Graduation rate Community buy-in, public awareness

Interventions for Struggling Learners

How Can We Help Struggling Learners Meet High Standards? Interventions Summit – January Reading Summit – March Look at current practices and needs How do we identify struggling learners? What are we doing to help them succeed? What needs to be done to help all students meet GPS standards and graduation requirements?

How Can We Help Struggling Learners Meet High Standards? Feedback from administrators, teachers Use feedback to: Create interventions strategies resource materials for schools Create support classes for content areas (math, science, others?) Plan additional training on differentiated instruction

How Can We Help Struggling Learners Meet High Standards? Online support courses Mathematics: 8 th grade summer remediation course 8 th grade course for retained students (for Fall, 2007) and teacher resource course 9 th grade support course (for transfer students) Including assessments
