1 The Roaring 1920s From Progressivism to Modernism: In contrast to progressive beliefs in the possibility of social improvement through reason, science, and democratization, Modernists lived for the moment, embraced technology but does not necessarily believe that the civilization would inevitably progress. Modernism recognized the limits of our perception of reality, celebrates secular culture. Arts, literature led the way to the modern era. It’s an era of excitement and bewilderment. It also produced defensive reactions to changes: nativism, Anglo-Sax racism, and militant Protestantism.
