3 At the end of the basketball season, a mostly close-ended survey was sent home to every parent who had a child in the basketball program. This was the third year in a row the same questionnaire was distributed. The response rate (completed surveys returned) was 30% (n=30). The confidence interval at 95% confidence is +/- 15% 2007-08’ 2006-07’ 2005-06’ Response Rate:30% (n=30) 28% (n=26)33% (n=30) Boys / Girls:43%/57% 78%/22%57%/43% A Team / B Team: 50%/50% 49%/51%53%/47% JV / Varsity:63%/37% 77%/23%53%/47% % distribution of total responses by team 07- 08’ Boys JV Boys Varsity Girls JV Girls Varsity A17%7%13% B10% 23%7% It is recommended that survey results are interpreted at total- level only

4 Parents rated their child’s overall experience for the 2007 / 2008 season as very positive with an average score of 5.39. This is the 3rd straight year of improvement: 2007-08’ = 5.39 2006-07’ = 4.85 2005-06’ = 4.81 ExcellentDisappointment 3% 4% 3% 0% 8% 13% 11% 10% 17% 35% 27% 65 43 21 63% 38% 43% Distribution of responses Q1.) 5 Parent’s expectations have remained fairly consistent from year to year - Learning “teamwork” and “sportsmanship” are the attributes parents continue to feel are the most important. Most Important Least Important Q2.) What attributes are important to you and your child in a basketball program?
6
6 Interestingly, yet not surprising, parent’s expectations on the noted attributes continue to rise each year. To the credit of many volunteers, the basketball program has responded to the challenge by continuing to improve and come closer to meeting or exceeding expectations. Achieved Did not achieve Q3.) How did the SCJN basketball program rate against these attributes?
7
7 Compared to last year, three attributes exceeded parent’s expectations (verses 2 the prior year). The difference between expectations and actual results appears to have become closer….a clear sign of improvement.

8 Quotes from Survey Describe what your child enjoyed the most about the program: Being with friends, new friendships, reconnecting with old friends….(multiple responses) Playing and social aspect….(multiple responses) Enjoyed practice, learning skills, learning the game….(multiple responses) Getting better at playing the game Teamwork Lots of playing time (B team)
9
9 Quotes from Survey What one improvement should be made for next year: More gym time; more practice earlier in the season...(multiple responses) Work on fundamentals….frustration with lack of skill development. Incorporate foul shooting and dribbling into weekly gym class because of limited gym time for team practices. Provide outdoor basketball hoops Equal playing time…..(only one response this year)
10
10 The performance of the coaches continues to be seen by the parents as positive. Q4.) Did the coach display… (6=always; 1=never)? 17% of respondents were dissatisfied with fairness compared to 35% in 06-07’
11
11 Similar to 2006-07’, most parents felt their child’s team improved during the season and that the number of games played was about right. 90% (88% in 06-07’) of parents felt their child’s team improved during the year The number of games played: 83% (73% in 06-07’) of parents felt the number of games was about right 17% (23% in 06-07’) felt too few games were played 0% ( 4% in 06-07’) felt too many games were played Q5.) Did the team improve during the year? Q6.) Was the number of games: about right, to many, to few?

12 Conclusions This is the third consecutive year the Athletic Board conducted this specific survey. We now have 3 years of data to help us understand what is important to the student athletes and parents and whether, we as a board, are meeting those expectations. While we would have hoped for a more significant response rate, it has also been consistent averaging ~30% each of the past three years. Such consistency does allows us to feel fairly confident in the results and provide us with information we can use to continue to improve the program. Some key “take-aways” from this year’s survey and 3 year trends include: The “overall experience” of the Student Athlete continues to improve. > 75% of measured attribute’s results were improved from last year. Relatively speaking the basketball program continues to perform well compared to expectations. Our conclusions from last year identified 4 areas in need of improvement: “Skill Development”, “Sportsmanship, Teamwork, & Self Esteem”, “Equal playing time” and “The overall performance of our coaching staff”. With the exception of Sportsmanship, where our results dropped ever so slightly, all of the other areas noted saw improvement in 2007-08’.
13
13 Conclusions Areas to Focus on: Skill Development: While having improved from last year this is still an area that needs to be improved. We will continue to evaluate and develop solutions to address this fundamental aspect of the program. Gym Time / Practice Time: Essentially going hand in hand with skill development, we will continue to look for ways to provide additional gym time for our many teams. Sportsmanship, Teamwork, Competitiveness and Self Esteem: We did not meet parent’s expectations in these areas although we did improve all of our results in these categories when compared to last year.

14 Conclusions The Athletic Board appreciates the feedback you have provided and will make every effort to improve the program and experience for our young student athletes. We appreciate the countless, and in many cases unrecognized, hours many of you provided to us, the coaches and the basketball program on behalf of your children. Our goal is to continue these surveys each year in an effort to measure our successes and correct weaknesses. Please continue to provide us your thoughts and ideas. We will make every effort to seriously consider and implement these ideas in the interest of our young student athlete’s development. Thank you! SCJN Athletic Board
