1 Solve Real World Problems by Writing (Translating) Expressions Today you will learn to: Apply properties of operations to add, subtract, factor, and expand linear expressions (with rational coefficients). Translate verbal phrases into algebraic expressions. M07. B-E.1.1.1: Apply properties of operations to add, subtract, factor, and expand linear expressions with rational coefficients M07.B-E.2.1.1: Apply properties of operations to calculate with numbers in any form.

2 Review: Translate Verbal Phrases We’ve previously discussed different phrases and key words that indicate an operation (See Table Below). Now, we’ll discuss how to use those key words to write an algebraic expression. Watch the Khan Academy video on writing expressions. Do the following sample expression problems!

3 Translate Phrases into Expressions: Examples Translate the following verbal phrases into algebraic expressions. You DO NOT evaluate the expressions.

4 Writing Expressions from Word Problems You can also translate verbal phrases in word problems to algebraic expressions. Watch the Pearson video on writing expressions from word problems. Do the following sample expression word problems!
