Unit 1 Relationships Between Quantities and Expressions Week 1 Lesson 1 – Students will identify the parts of an Algebraic expression
2
Today’s Objectives Focus Standard: A.SSE.1 – Interpret parts of an expression. Objective: Students will identify the parts of an expression and discuss how many solutions are possible when working with algebraic expressions – Link for lots of Technology practice
3
Essential Questions How are algebraic expressions and algebraic equations similar and different? How many solutions can an Algebraic expression have? Why? How many solutions can an Algebraic Equation have? Why?

Read, Write, Draw, Solve Jasmine has been exercising. She walks 4 miles each day. Write an expression that can represent the situation Explain what each term in your expression represents. How many miles will Jasmine have walked if she walked 4 days? Students will independently complete the RWDS each day. Monitor to check that students are doing the work. Discuss the answers. The opening tasks will increase with difficulty and complexity in order that students will become more comfortable working with context problems, applying mathematical understanding of concepts and learning how to write and explain their answers and reasoning.

James said the factors of the expression:
5 · (8 – a) are 5, 8 and a. Do you agree or disagree? Explain. B. Jasmine had to list the coefficients for each term in the following expression: 15x2 – x – 8 Her answer was “15.” Did she get it right? Explain.
