The Essential Steps You Will Go Through Are: 1. Log-in to https://webspace.utexas.eduhttps://webspace.utexas.edu 2. Navigate to (or create) your “www” directory 3. Create an “images” directory within “www” directory 4. Upload two image files provided to you into the “images” directory 5. Navigate up to your “www” directory 6. (1) Use TextEdit or Notepad to edit HTML source code files. (2) Set preferences in TextEdit / Notepad to "Plain text" / "Text”. (3) As you open a new file in TextEdit / Notepad --- STOP. If you see formatting indicators (a "Styles" menu, alignment buttons, "Spacing" options, margins or tab markers) across the top of the new file window --- stop. Close that new, blank file. Set preferences in TextEdit / Notepad to "Plain text" or "Text". Close, then reopen TextEdit / Notepad to invoke the new preferences. Open a new blank file. It should have no margin or tab indicators HTML tricks, tips and irritants: "Plain text""Rich text"

(4) Problems tend to resolve to the following issues: (a) All file names are case sensitive (b) File names cannot contain spaces or special characters (c) As you replace file names or modify text within HTML source code to substitute your own content for the example content, be aware of quotation marks as well as right- and left- angle brackets ( " " ). Don't inadvertently remove or alter these characters. They are central to the construction of HTML source code. (d) Save your work often. (e) Open your HTML source code files in your browser using the browser's "File/Open File…" menu choice before you upload to your webspace directory. (f) Always "refresh" your browser prior to viewing recently uploaded work. (g) As you upload files to webspace, make sure the names DO NOT include any directory "prefixes," such as "Documents/YourName/tumbleweed.jpg" You only want to upload, "tumbleweed.jpg" HTML tricks, tips and irritants:

(5) Keep three windows open on your desktop simultaneously: (a) Text Edit / Notepad (b) Browser opened to your webspace "www" directory (c)Browser opened to "http://webspace.utexas.edu/~YourEID/http://webspace.utexas.edu/~YourEID/ This allows you to: (a) View your working HTML file in TextEdit / Notepad (b) Quickly upload files to your "www" directory (c) View the file you just uploaded (“refresh” your browser each time) HTML tricks, tips and irritants:

Next Steps: 1. Open the “QuickStartWebspacePublishing2.ppt,” and follow the general process it describes. Substitute the files described above for the ones used in this PowerPoint. 2. Open the “QuickStartWebspaceSetPermissions.ppt. Follow the instructions to properly set permissions for your webspace site. 3. Document this initial site construction by capturing screen shots of each of your four pages: index.html Home resume.html Resume work.html Work links.html Links 4.
