Federalist claimed Jefferson was pro-French
D-R targeted Adams for Alien and Sedition Acts
The election ended in a tie

3. The House is deadlocked
Alexander Hamilton urged Federalists to back Jefferson
After 36 votes cast, Jefferson wins
Voting problems lead to the passage of the XIIth Amendment. Electors must cast separate ballots for President and Vice President
Burr blamed Hamilton for the loss

4. Hamilton prevented Burr from becoming Governor of NY
Burr challenged Hamilton to a duel
July 1804—Hamilton died as a result
Burr’s political career was over
