The House is deadlocked
Alexander Hamilton urged Federalists to back Jefferson After 36 votes cast, Jefferson wins Voting problems lead to the passage of the XIIth Amendment. Electors must cast separate ballots for President and Vice President Burr blamed Hamilton for the loss

Hamilton prevented Burr from becoming Governor of NY
Burr challenged Hamilton to a duel July 1804—Hamilton died as a result Burr’s political career was over

THE LOUSIANA PURCHASE France wanted the Louisiana Territory that Spain acquired at the end of the Revolutionary War 1800-Secret treaty-Spain returns land to France James Monroe sent to Paris to purchase land April 30, 1803—Lousiana Territory purchased for 80 million francs ($15 million)
