4 JESSIE MACWILLIAMS 1)born in 1917 in England 2)received her BA in 1938 and her MA the following year - both from Cambridge University 3) 1939, received traveling scholarship from Cambridge - went to Johns Hopkins University 4)1940, went to Harvard University - study for a year 5)married in 1941, left her mathematical work for some years - raise her three children (one daughter and two sons)

5 JESSIE MACWILLIAMS 1)1955 - became programmer - learned coding theory 2)Although did major research at Bell Labs 3)turned down - promotion for mathematics research position 4)she received a Ph.D 5)completed her PhD after returning to Harvard - one more year (1961-1962). 6)MacWilliams retired from Bell Labs in January 1983 and died in May 1990
