1 Metal Identification

2 Objectives Explain the difference between ferrous and non-ferrous metals on a worksheet in class with 100% accuracy. Identify the different types of ferrous and non-ferrous metals in class with 90% accuracy. Identify the different shapes of metals on a worksheet in class with 100% accuracy.

3 Reasons to Learn Why do we need to know the different types of metals?
Why do we need to know the difference between ferrous and non-ferrous metals? Why do we need to learn the characteristics associated with each type of metal?

4 Questions to Answer What are non-ferrous metals?
What are ferrous metals? What are the different types of metals used for? What are the characteristics associated with different types of metals?

5 Terms Metal fabrication- building metal structures by cutting, bending, and assembling Ferrous metal- made from iron ore Non-ferrous- does not contain iron Alloy- made from a combination of 2 or more metals Metallurgy- studying the chemistry and structure of metals Metal fabrication is building metal structures by cutting, bending, and assembling. We need to know about the different types of metal to be able to assemble structures correctly. Different types of metal have different characteristics and major uses.

6 Ferrous metals Metals made from iron ore. Iron ore is readily available and is easy to convert to a useful form. Alloys of iron and steel are the most abundant of all commercial metals. Examples: Cast iron- molded Wrought iron- ornamental Mild steel Tool steel- used to make tools Stainless steel (can be either ferrous or non-ferrous depending on iron content) Plated steel- similar to mild steel; has a galvanized coating that protects it from rust. One easy trick to see if a metal is ferrous or not is to see if a magnet will stick to it. A magnet will stick to a piece of ferrous metal because of the iron content.

7 Non-ferrous metals Examples: Aluminum Brass Copper Lead Tin

8 Shapes of Metals Rod Flat Angle Channel Tee I-beam Pipe

9 You can determine what a piece of metal is by these determining characteristics:
Color Weight Strength Iron content

10 Review What are the 2 classifications of metal and what is the difference between the two? Give some examples of ferrous metals. Give some examples of non-ferrous metals. List the common shapes of metal.

11 Where does this metal come from?
Metal: An element with a metallic luster that is malleable, ductile, and has a high tensile strength. Ore: A rock that contains a large about of a certain mineral. Mineral: A natural inorganic substance on or in the earth.

12 Strip-Mining A form of surface mining in which the mineral is extracted after removing the soil covering it. Strip mining is a type of surface mining that involves excavating earth, rock, and other material to uncover a tabular, lens-shaped, or layered mineral reserve.

14 Subsurface mining Methods used to extract minerals from below the surface of the earth. (Underground mining)
