How to Complete the Frayer Model Write the definition of the vocabulary word. Write the word characteristics (parts of speech, etc.) Give examples or synonyms of the vocabulary word. Give non-examples or antonyms of the vocabulary word.

Selective Highlighting/Underlining Have students preview the material without a highlighter first: – Read introductory paragraph – Note bold headings – Examine pictures/graphs/charts – Read concluding paragraph

Selective Highlighting/Underlining Re-read one paragraph at a time and begin highlighting/underlining key words or phrases. You may have the students underline different concepts in different colors – For example: pink = vocabulary words, yellow = main idea, blue = details, etc.
