4.  He was the first Hispanic astronaut.  He was selected by NASA in 1980 to go into space.  He went on three space walks  In May 5 th, 2012 he was introduced to the NASA hall of fame.  He did seven space missions.  He retired from NASA in 2005.

5.  Franklin wanted to move to the United States to try to become to become an astronaut when he was young.  He grew up where he was born, San José, Costa Rica.  Franklin was one of six children.  Franklin was inspired by Sputnik to become a astronaut..

6. In December 17, 1984 in the United States he married Peggy Marguerite Doncaster His daughters are Lidia Aurora and Miranda Karina.

7.  He attended elementary school at Father Juan de Barnuevo Venezuela. He graduated from Colegio La Salle in November 1967, then moved to the United States and went to Hartford Public High School. Then he went on to attend the University of Connecticut.
