Harnessing the Technical Capacities of the United States U.S. Agency for International Development U.S. State Department U.S. Geological Survey U.S. Forest Service NASA U.S. Environmental Protection Agency NOAA Smithsonian Institution As well as U.S. universities, NGOs, donors and industry

Areas and Regions Globally – SilvaCarbon is the US contribution to the Group on Earth Observations - Global Forest Observation Initiative (GEO –GFOI) to enhance global capacities for forest carbon monitoring – Improving coordination of USG assistance to developing countries on forest carbon – Improving technical knowledge through research and technology development and dissemination. Regionally – Regional training activities – Coordination of regional information sharing and capacity building with developing and other donor country partners Bi-Lateral – Detailed programs of work to address key needs identified by the partner country – Flexible approach to work with multiple partners and adapt to each countries needs and situation.

SilvaCarbon coordination with other USG support The US supports a number of different bi-lateral, regional, and global programs that work on forest monitoring in addition to SilvaCarbon Examples – Global: Forest, Carbon, Markets, and communities program (FCMC); WRI Global Forest Watch SERVIR (NASA) Governors’ Climate and Forest Fund Land Cover for Climate (LC4Climate) – Regional: Central Africa Regional Program for the Environment (CARPE) the Initiative for Conservation in the Andean Amazon (ICAA) – Bilateral Mexico’s Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation Program(M-REDD) BIOREDD (Colombia) SilvaCarbon has collaborative activities with a number of programs and works ad- hoc to ensure collaboration with other programs working in the same countries.

The SERVIR Program SERVIR is a flagship initiative of USAID and NASA with the Objective to: Strengthen the capacity of government decision-makers and other key stakeholders to integrate earth observation information and geospatial technologies into development decision-making

Lower Mekong Hub RCMRD – Host of SERVIR-East Africa ICIMOD – Host of SERVIR-Himalaya CATHALAC – Host of SERVIR-Mesoamerica The SERVIR Network West Africa Hub Joining in 2014: Lower Mekong and West Africa

What SERVIR Does Improves access to data, models, maps Strengthens the capacity of regional institutions, stakeholders, and youth Creates user-tailored decision support tools and services with local partners Raises awareness of the value of user- tailored earth observation information Builds partnerships

More than 40 decision-support tools and products developed: Agriculture: Crop yield forecasting, Drought forecasting Water: Streamflow forecasting, Flood early warning Health: Malaria early warning, Red tide monitoring Disasters: Post disaster assessment, Fire monitoring and alerts Land use and land cover: Land cover mapping, GHG inventory See: https://servirglobal.net/Africa.aspxhttps://servirglobal.net/Africa.aspx SERVIR Applications
