Structures of the Nervous System
3
1.List the structures that make up the nervous system. Brain Cranial nerves spinal cord spinal nerves ganglia enteric plexus Sensory receptors 2. What is a nerve? bundle of hundreds of thousands of axons plus associated connective tissue and blood vessels that lie outside the brain and spinal cord
4
3. What is the difference between cranial nerves and spinal nerves? cranial nerves- emerge from the base of the brain and carry information from sense organs of the head Spinal nerves- emerge from the spinal cord and serve specific regions on the right and left side of the body small masses of nervous tissue located outside of the brain and spinal cord contain cell bodies of neurons in cranial and spinal nerves 4. What are ganglia and what do they contain?
5
5. Where is the enteric plexus located and what does it do? located in the walls of gastrointestinal organs helps regulate the digestive system 6. What are sensory receptors? dendrites of sensory neurons (sensory receptors in skin) or separate, specialized cells that monitor changes in the internal or external environment (photoreceptors in the retina)

Functions of the Nervous System
7
1. What three basic functions occur in the nervous system? Sensory, Integrative, Motor 2. What is the function of sensory neurons? carry sensory information to the brain and spinal cord
8
3. Describe the integrative function of the nervous system. The brain processes sensory information by analyzing and storing the information and makes decisions to determine the appropriate response 4. What is a motor neuron and what is its function? neuron that carries information from the brain to effectors (muscles and glands)
