10-2 Events that lead to the Louisiana Purchase Napoleon little man Big Plans Wanted to start colonies in North America- place rich with resources Fighting with Britain- Trying to take over Haiti – big problems on a little Island US will help, trying to stay on the good side of Napoleon

Jefferson's dilemma taking liberties with the Constitution in the name of need and expediency- would lead to future Presidents feeling justified with a continual increase in the elasticity of Article I, Section 8, Clause 18- Elastic Clause Went against his views as a strict constitutionalist

Problems in the west with France and Spain France and Spain control the Mississippi River –had received the ground from England after the Revolutionary War Spain Shuts Down New Orleans- did not think much of the US, small military, treaty with France French/Spain Treaty- Gave France control of New Orleans. Was to be used as a jump off spot for Napoleons big plans

Jefferson's reasons There was a fear that if America did not purchase New Orleans from France, it could lead to war Land was needed if Jefferson's idea of a common way of life was to be seem poised to firm up its exclusive claim to the Mississippi and to get rid of foreign influences on the North American continent Did not want to join England in its fight against France
