Lesson 13-1 Pages 669-672 Polynomials
2
What you will learn! 1. How to identify and classify polynomials. 2. How to find the degree of a polynomial.
3
PolynomialBinomial Trinomial Degree
4
What you really need to know! Polynomials are classified according to the number of terms they have. A monomial has one term, a binomial has two terms, and a trinomial has three terms.
5
What you really need to know! A polynomial also has a degree. The degree of a polynomial is the same as that of the term with the greatest degree. The degree of a term is the sum of the exponents of its variables.
6
What you really need to know! The exponent of a variable in a monomial must be a whole number, and the variable cannot be in the denominator or under a radical sign.
8
Example 1a: Determine whether the expression is a polynomial. If it is, classify it as a monomial, binomial, or trinomial. Not a polynomial!
9
Example 1b: Determine whether the expression is a polynomial. If it is, classify it as a monomial, binomial, or trinomial. Yes ; Binomial
10
Example 2a: Find the degree of each monomial. 4 th degree
11
Example 2b: Find the degree of each monomial. 3+7+1 = 11 th degree
12
Example 3a: Find the degree of each polynomial. 2 + 5 = 7 th degree
13
Example 3b: Find the degree of each polynomial. 1 + 6 = 7 th degree
14
Example 4: The formula for the surface area (A) of a cube is A = 6s 2, where s is the side length. Find the degree of the polynomial. 2 nd degree
