Ag. & Trade Support Cities Mayan comms:  Based on ag., handicrafts, & long-distance trade Intensive Ag. = BASIS OF LIFE!  –cleared (slash/burn), irrigated, terraced  Squash, chili peppers, & maize (80% of food) Maya city-states = linked by trade  Metal work, cotton cloth, flint  Used currencies (cocoa beans, polished beads, salt, & lengths of cotton)

11 II. Religion in Mayan Life Religion = permeated all phases of life  Life = burden (time is a measure) Need to appease the gods thru pain/suffering  Complex Worshiped over 160 gods gods of corn, of death, of rain, of war Could be good or evil (both) Each day was a living god
