6 How to Become a Business Major ? The School of Business has a competitive admission process so it is very important to build a strong foundation early in your academic career.

7 Two-Step Process 1.Declare “Pre-business” Status  Complete five skills classes  Cumulative GPA > 2.25  Advised in Business Student Services 2.Submit a formal application  Semester prior to enrolling in 300-level business courses (usually in the sophomore year)  Successfully complete 12 business prerequisites  Admission is highly competitive

8 What Prerequisite Courses are Required? ►Skills Courses: Eng 101, Eng 102, Phil 106, Spc 105 and Cmis 108 ►Foundation Courses: Econ 111, Econ 112, Acct 200, Math 120, Ms 250, Hist 111b and Pols 112 ►These prerequisite courses also meet general education requirements.

9 Freshman Year Goals ►Complete Skills courses to develop basic written, oral, and critical thinking skills ►Begin foundation requirements for business knowledge ►Get involved on campus ►Gain independence and take responsibility for your own decisions ►Your first semester will probably include:  A writing or English class  A math class  Econ 111 (if you are ready)  A freshman seminar  Skills courses

10 Sophomore Year Goals ►Complete Prerequisite Courses ►Declare Pre-Business ►Apply to the School of Business ►Increase campus/community involvement ►Enhance understanding of group dynamics and cultural diversity ►Register at the Career Development Center

11 Junior/Senior Year Goals ►Choose a business specialization or area of study ►Be aware of course sequencing within your major and make a plan for completion ►Consider studying abroad, work experience and/or internships related to career goals ►Seek leadership positions or volunteer opportunities ►Apply for Graduation

12 What if I am still deciding on my major? ►On average, 80% of students will change their major at least once and most change their major three times over the course of their college career. ►Most courses you take in your first year fit well with the SIUE general education program ►Focus on classes related to any prospective majors early in your college career ►Resources for choosing a major:  Academic Advisor  Career Development Center
