Knightswood Primary School House & Vice Captains present OUR FOOD JOURNEY 2014-2015
2
Our Story So Far We realised that there has been lots of wasted food and we wanted to change that. So far we have been weighing the wasted food every Tuesday and Thursday.
3
What have we found? We couldn’t see much of a pattern however when we encouraged children to eat up and especially when Mr Murphy did, we got less waste. We tried to get more adult volunteers and they help us now. When we have a house lunch we think there is less waste, we have a house lunch every month.
4
More information We analysed the waste on one day and we found that we could feed about 30 people a day from the waste. SaladMilkBreadFruitSoupMeatPotatoesPackaging No of portions Per average bag 2 2112216650g No of portions -5 bags per day 101056010530 250g No of people we could feed per day 30 No of people we could feed per week 150 No of people we could feed per year 6000
5
More information We found out that we could feed 150 people a week and 6000 people a year just from what we throw away.
6
More information We had a ‘Clear a Plate’ day and this resulted in MUCH less waste. We will speak to everyone at assembly and keep encouraging everyone to try hard.
7
Our journey… We found out that most of the waste was fruit, so we made the fruit basket so that if someone didn’t want their piece of fruit in the basket and we would make it into frozen yoghurt or smoothies. We are not encouraging the children to put it in there all the time we are just doing it in case they don’t want it. We want children to eat healthily.
8
The journey continues… We also know that lots of people throw out lots of milk everyday. 105 cartons were thrown out the day we looked at the waste. We have asked children not to take milk if they don’t want it. We have asked Mrs McIntosh to environmentally friendly cups so everyone can get water and we can recycle the cups.
9
…and continues BEBL (Better Eating Better Learning) is the website we post blogs on to explaining what we have found out. We have had multiple agency meetings. We have House Lunches at the end of every month to help reduce the waste. We already have done PowerPoints on Food Waste and Food Miles, showing all the children in the school these and how we all need to help.
10
Improvements so far We think that everybody is more aware of the need to cut waste. We don’t waste as much fruit and people get extra fruit. We think that the dinner ladies are going to help us by letting us help our self to some things. We have more adult coming to help us at lunch. Some parents now know and have offered to help us.
