Introduction to Leadership 3 credit course Offered both Spring and Fall Equivalent to INST 115: Student Leadership Development Students explore leadership development, through the use of both cognitive and experiential components Students gain a fundamental understanding of leadership, with opportunity to practice leadership, decision making, and other related skills

Organizational Leadership Development No VWC equivalent 1 credit course Offered both Spring and Fall Taught by the Director of Student Activities Experience and learn leadership though affiliation with a campus organization Advisor will monitor tasks and responsibilities, assess progress, and evaluate the leadership strengths and weaknesses of each student

Dynamics of Organizational Behavior No VWC equivalent 3 credit course Offered both Spring and Fall Teaches students about: –effective teamwork behaviors –methods for motivating individuals and groups –organizational behavior concepts and theories present in real business world –the ethics and social responsibilities in organizational behavior

PORTfolio Problem Solving PORT 221 3 credit course Offered in Fall semester Connects classroom learning with real- world experiences Will learn critical thinking, problem-solving, conflict-resolution strategies, and collaborative learning skills

Leadership Through Service in Hampton Roads PORT 124 3 credit course Offered during Winter Session Introduces students to the civic and social issues impacting the Hampton Roads community Allows student to use leadership skills while helping the community

Organizational Electives One 3 credit course that focus on how organizations and groups function –SOC 303 - Small Groups Sociological theories and methods are used to analyze the structure and processes of small social groups –PSY 324 - Group Dynamics Student gains knowledge of the factors that need to be monitored and controlled for unit to respond productively to the obligations placed upon it. Focuses on leadership styles, goal-setting techniques, decision-making strategies, maintenance of group cohesion, and providing for effective communication

Communication Electives One 3 credit course that focus on how to communicate effectively with groups –COMM 222 - Speech Introduction to the theory and practice of speech communication including public speaking, the five-minute extemporaneous speech, improvement of diction, and elements of non-verbal communications. –COMM 325 - Organizational Communications Designed to improve skills in communication in modern business. Verbal skills are emphasized although written skills are included. Theory and practice are combined in order to learn theory and develop skills in using techniques of persuasion, resolving conflicts, organizing and presenting information, interviewing, leading meetings, and developing a training presentation.

Resolution Electives PHIL102 - Contemporary Moral Issues PHIL 212 - Practical Ethics MBE 400 - Seminar in Managerial Ethics POLS 373 - Conflict Management PSY 257 - Introduction to Sports Psychology One 3 credit course that deals with solving the moral, ethical or controversial problems that arise when leading and working with groups.

Advantages Allow students to incorporate classes from PORTfoilo, other majors and interests into a recognized minor. Helps develop leadership abilities for use both on and off campus. Helps students develop needed skills for after graduation
