Editing Transitions Today’s lesson moves on from editing systems and cutting techniques to the actual transitions between bits of footage themselves. There are also some other effects added in the editing process to be covered. By the end of the lesson: Know and understand the terms Start to apply them to moving image clips Editing
2
Editing Transitions Just like those Year 9 PowerPoints you once made, editors have some tricks up their sleeves to make the transitions between one bit of footage and the next more interesting. What do you think these might be? 3 minutes, discuss in pairs Editing
3
Match them! 1.Wipe 2.Fade 3.Dissolve 4.Superimposition 5.Special effects Editing A.When the image gradually disappears to be replaced by another underneath. B.When the clip is eliminated & replaced by a colour, often black. C.When two video sources are displayed on the screen simultaneously D.Any number of different visual and computer-generated tricks applied after filming, including green-screen work, CGI etc E.A very obvious transition where a line transfers one image to the next – it brings with it the new footage

Notes You can have a ‘fade from’ just as you can a ‘fade to’ (e.g. FTB is a fade to black, FFW is a fade from white). The difference between a fade and a dissolve is that with a dissolve the next bit of footage appears immediately. Special effects edits can include such diverse items as models, animatronics and digital painting. We say that any of the effects or transitions applied are in post-production (i.e. after the filming has been completed) Editing

Trailers – an editing frenzy! Watch this trailer for The Adjustment Bureau and note the types of transitions featured. Think about why they have been used. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSe WHl1PaKs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSe WHl1PaKs Editing

Editing Transitions Time The last component missing from our editing knowledge is time. Directors can take control of their universe by manipulating time. Editing
9
Editing Transitions Time We are now going to watch a clip from ‘Psycho’, Alfred Hitchcock’s masterpiece in cinema. Your task is to count the number of individual edits (every time the footage cuts from one bit to another) in this first section – until the curtain is pulled back. Then, we’ll be counting them in the second section – until the end of the clip. Editing
10
Editing Transitions Time Questions: Why has Hitchcock included so many edits in this scene? What effect do the edits have? Discuss with a partner in preparation for whole-class feedback. Editing
11
Editing Transitions Time Editing Editing can slow or expand time… Here is an action sequence that takes longer to watch than it should... And here’s a clip that, in real time, you would have to watch for years
12
Editing Transitions Creative Task Questions: What transitions would you select to go between the pieces of footage specified in the boxes? Complete this on your sheet. 6 minutes Editing
13
Editing Transitions: Time Editing Working as a table, write one of these definitions & reasons each. Then come to a group agreement on the fifth… Make sure you write them all down! TermDefinitionWhy used? Short take Long take Slow motion Ellipsis of time Expansion of time
