1st Grade Focus Phonics - Project Read Program Dolch Word Recognition - Word Ring Guided Reading - Leveled Books and Comprehension Strategies Word Study/Spelling - Word Sorts

Project Read Multisensory approach (e.g. salt tray, felt paper, glue letters, skywriting, finger spelling) Bonnie Kline Stories Books to match unit materials

Word Rings Words come from Dolch Word List 10 new words per week (can be modified as needed) They are checked in class - 3 marks on the back and the word is “retired” Memory Boxes

Leveled Books Used with Guided Reading Practice Books on the weekends (one level lower for independent reading) Sent home for 2 nights in a row for fluency

Word Study - Sorts Used to help students identify spelling and phonics patterns in words. Assist in spelling instruction

Fluency The ability to read a text smoothly, easily, correctly, and at the right pace (accuracy, rate, and expression) Allows reading to sound like speaking The bridge between word recognition and comprehension Necessary for enjoyable reading

Homework Students have HW each night Usually consists of: –A book to read –Word/Phrase ring to practice –Finish a worksheet or sort from class What do I do when HW takes too long or it is too difficult for my child that night?

Parent FAQ’s (see handout) What needs to be kept in my child’s folder at all times? Can we keep the books that are printed on white copy paper? Why do you assign HW on the weekend? Why are some books sent home two nights in a row?

Parent FAQ’s What do we do with the cut-up sentence envelope that is sent home? How can I help my child with a word they do not know? How can I help my child learn the words on their ring in a fun way? I have more questions. Who can I ask?
