The Caldecott Medal looks like this The first medal was awarded in 1938. It has been awarded every year since then.

Awarding the Caldecott Medal The Caldecott Medal is an annual award given to the illustrator of the most distinguished American picture book for children. The illustrator must be a citizen or resident of the United States. The illustrations must appear in a book published in the United States. The winner is announced in January for books published the previous year.

Caldecott Honor Books Each year only one book wins the Caldecott Medal. Other books that are considered to have high quality illustrations can be named as Honor Books.
