Wind Turbine Design and Implementation Phase III Senior Design May 2011-01 Team Andrew Nigro (EE) Chad Hand (EE) Luke Rupiper (EE) Ryan Semler (EE) Shonda Butler (EE) Advisor: Venkataramana Ajjarapu

The objective of the senior design project is to simulate an environment in which a wind resource provides renewable energy. The electricity generated from the wind turbine can be used to power a direct load and potentially be integrated into the Iowa State University power grid. Problem Statement

An Overview of the Existing Wind Power System System Description Diagram provided by group SDMAY10-17

Ideally would be mounted to the roof of a building Controlled environment inside power lab in Coover Wind simulation with AC motor Input data provided from wind sensors LabVIEW interface to simulate outside conditions based on data received Operation Environment Picture provided by group SDMAY10-17

LabVIEW User Interface Screenshot provided by group SDMAY10-17

Functional Generates power according to simulated wind speed o Display wind speed and corresponding power o Expansion from existing adjustable power supply to vary motor’s input to turbine Balance between the load's power requirements and output from wind turbine and battery bank Simulate pitch control using LabVIEW Non-function Compliance with state and federal electrical regulations Build stable operating platform Technical manual and in-depth documentation Reorganize wiring and build new load platform Requirements

Hardware o Turbine mounting platform very unreliable o No straps for testing turbine o Load platform needs modification o Lower accuracy of current RPM sensor o No wiring diagram; wiring is very unorganized and not functional Software o LabVIEW program needs modification o Finding reliable way to receive data from wind sensor for simulating change of wind in laboratory Constraints

Assumptions: Turbine is in perfect working condition o Without a proper testing platform, we are unable to determine if the turbine is operating as specified Cost Estimations: Mounting Platform $80 o A stable platform made of wood to mount the coupled motor and turbine as one unit Load Platform optional $20 o The existing platform is made of wood and needs to be modified or rebuilt to meet electrical standards RPM sensor optional $10 o The existing sensor was built from the previous team and has lower accuracy than a procured one, this may be replaced after analyzing results New turbine with control capabilities $10,000 o This is outside of our budget and will not be replaced Assumptions/Costs

Week 2: 9/3/10 - First team/adviser meeting o Set team roles and create e-mail list serv Week 3: 9/10/10 - Understand problem statement, criteria, and constraints o Set weekly meetings with group on Thursdays and with adviser on Fridays o Meeting with weather sensor group and work on integration (Weeks 3 - 16) Week 4: 9/15/10 - Meeting with past group member (Brandon) Week 5: 9/23/10 - Charge battery bank - verify most parts from previous project still work o Create Draft Presentation and Project Plan document Week 6: 9/30/10 - Test run wind turbine and familiarize with LabVIEW interface o Draft Project Plan document Schedule

Week 7:10/7/10 - Finalize Project Plan document o Design new platform for turbine (Week 7 - 10) Weeks 8 - 10: 10/14/10 - 10/28/10 o Rewire and organize setup o Construct new platforms and verify stability Weeks 11-12: 11/4/10 - 11/11/10 o Finalize load control and weather sensor design o Document project issues and constraints to be considered for implementation phase o Create Design Draft Week 13 - 16: 11/18/10 -12/7/10 o Group presentation - Design Draft o Design Reviews Week 17: 12/14/10 - Prepare materials for next semester Schedule

Fix interface and hook up wind sensor to simulate wind indoors Set voltage sensors to determine load and control power output of turbine Create manual to get future groups working on this project up to speed faster Construct new mount for system to make testing safer and more efficient Reconstruct load for a more reliable and professional system Add switch on inverter and breakers on incoming power for safety Innovation

Professor knowledge of previous semesters, and desired output Previous Senior Design Group knowledge of entire operation User Manuals manuals for turbine, inverter, and LabView National Instruments help forums Other Senior Design Group they are implementing the outdoor wind sensor Resources
