Specialized Workers Surpluses of food allow people to specialize in jobs outside of agriculture. Specialized workers such as artisans, doctors, and soldiers strengthen and expand civilization. Complex Institutio ns Complex institutions such as law codes, religion, and an economy are characteristics of civilization. They organize, unite, and help civilization to prosper. Record Keeping & Writing Each civilization develops a system of writing. Laws and important religious beliefs and the rituals can be written down. Trade can be recorded. People can use a writing system to share thoughts and ideas, creating literature and written history.
