© 2011 Autodesk Class Summary This class will show you how to:  Be more productive in creating model content  Be more productive in creating document details  Help your staff learn the program more quickly  Keep your model content uniform across projects

© 2011 Autodesk Learning Objectives At the end of this class, you will be able to:  Insert structural objects into your model from an easy icon-based browser  Create your own icon-driven folders for placing content directly into models  Give your staff an intuitive tool for learning Revit  Standardize model content across projects in your office  Draw steel and concrete details in Revit quickly and with high quality results

© 2011 Autodesk Getting Productive in Revit: Clicks Are the Key

© 2011 Autodesk When it comes to being productive, time is money…  Finding the location of the right family type can take 5-6 mouse clicks  Multiple copies of similar objects can make lead to inconsistencies  Overall workflow is slow compared to CAD

© 2011 Autodesk  It’s like shopping at a big box retailer. First find the store. Placing objects in Revit…. What drive are the family files located on now?

© 2011 Autodesk Next find the aisle… OK, is this family a 2-D component or a symbol?  What type of family is it?

© 2011 Autodesk  Where is the family? Next find the shelf… All these file names look alike, which one is the one I want?

© 2011 Autodesk  Select the type of element to load from the family Then find the object you want… Hey, I wanted a drill but I got a flashlight instead?? And if it’s not the right type… start the whole process over!

© 2011 Autodesk The problem is that writing software for Revit is easier said than done...  The ADN interface provides limited access to program commands  APIs require coding in C Sharp and is not script driven like AutoCAD  Programming takes hundreds of hours and endless debugging

© 2011 Autodesk Even with these challenges, we decide to commit the resources to develop this in-house….

© 2011 Autodesk Graphical objects provide intuitive usage  Minimal user manuals work best  People respond innately to graphical images  Icons make the workflow fast and easy to learn Icons that represent families make placing objects obvious, not obscure

© 2011 Autodesk Our Solution: An Icon-Driven Menu for Placing 2-D and 3-D Objects

© 2011 Autodesk It starts with new tabs right in the menu Steel Tab Concrete Tab Rebar2D Tab Connection Tab Symbols Tab Tools Tab

© 2011 Autodesk Steel Tab: 3-D objects and 2-D components in one menu 3-D Columns and Beams

© 2011 Autodesk Steel Tab 2-D components in section, top and side views

© 2011 Autodesk Concrete Tab 3-D families for columns, beams footings and pile caps

© 2011 Autodesk Rebar Tab for 2-D components 2-D components  handles to adjust rebar  rebar is true to CRSI standards Shape can also be adjusted in element property table

© 2011 Autodesk Connections Tab: 2-D components for steel details

© 2011 Autodesk Connections Tab

© 2011 Autodesk Tools Tab: helps in a variety of ways Create custom folders to place families you own. Create shafts, openings and depression Change text characteristics Reduce file size for exchanges

© 2011 Autodesk Software Demonstration  Steel Tab  Concrete Tab  Symbols and Connection Tabs  Detailing in Concrete  Detailing in Steel  Tools Tab

© 2011 Autodesk Additional Benefits  Intuitive icons and menus make Revit easy to learn  Menu-driven placement of objects make for uniform model building

© 2011 Autodesk If you don’t want to write your own custom application… this API is now available online www.popiconsoftware.com Trail versions available on free flash drives at 50% off for AU attendees! To get this discount enter the coupon code: AU2011

© 2011 Autodesk Autodesk University Session Feedback Your feedback is very important to Autodesk. You can complete the session survey on your mobile device, PC, or at a survey station. Each completed session survey enters you in that day’s drawing for a free AU 2012 pass. You can help make AU 2012 better!
