2. © Nuffield Trust Why does efficiency matter? The NHS needs to make unprecedented savings up to 2015 and beyond. As the Government tries to shift more care into the community, the pressure facing hospitals will be even greater. Improvements in hospital efficiency in England during previous times of financial constraint have come from treating more patients, as well as from saving money.
