Science in the FCS Classroom I never teach my pupils. I only attempt to provide the conditions in which they can learn.in which they can learn. Albert Einstein

Science in the FCS Classroom

TEKS Addressed – Lifetime Nutrition and Wellness 5(A) The student demonstrates knowledge of food management principles. The student will demonstrate correct food preparation techniques, including nutrient retention – Food Science 4(A) The student analyzes the role of acids and bases in the food sciences. The student will identify the properties of acids and bases. 6(I) The student studies the chemical properties of food. The student will analyze chemical and physical changes in food

Science in the FCS Classroom TEKS Addressed: – Lifetime Nutrition and Wellness 1(A) Classify nutrients, their functions, and food sources and compare the nutritive value of various foods – Food Science 17(A) compare the properties of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids – Culinary Arts 6(A) The students understands the basics of nutrition

Science in the FCS Classroom Suggestions for Using “Fat Balloons”: 1.Have students list examples of food that contain the type of fat they have illustrated. 2.Use the balloons as a visual when discussing the types of fat used in recipes in the laboratory. 3.For fun have “fat building” races and see who can build their molecule the fastest and the most accurate… Then give then a “Fat Prize”.
