for every woman Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) is a proposed amendment to the United States Constitution designed to guarantee equal rights for women. The ERA was originally written by Alice Paul and Crystal Eastman. It was introduced in the Congress for the first time in 1923. In 1972, it passed both chambers in Congress and headed to state legislatures for ratification. 9
11
for every woman YWCA Historical Role in ERA 1920s Based on its experience with industrial women, the National Board of the YWCA, protested against the proposed “Equal Rights Amendment” in 1921. “Unjust discrimination against women, can be removed more effectively by working for more specific laws than blanket legislation.” In 1936, the National Board for the YWCA joined (8) other national women’s organizations to protest the ERA. 1970s When the 1970s women’s movement revived the push to ratify the ERA, the YWCA re- examined its long held position. At the 1973 Convention YWCA membership first voted to endorse the ERA. The National Board recommended that local associations be involved in an aggressive program to advance position of minority and low income women. Monitor progress toward ERA and its ratification; and partner with women’s organizations to advance ERA. 10
