2 England and the Church 4 In 1528, King Henry VIII asked the pope to annul, or cancel, his marriage. The pope refused Henry’s request. Henry took the Church from the pope’s control and created the Church of England. Henry declared his marriage to Catherine of Aragon annulled, and married Anne Boleyn (the 2nd of 6 wives)
