4 Immigration Millions of German and Irish immigrants came to the US for the Industrial Revolution looking for work and a better life Immigrants came to the US from Ireland because a potato famine (massive starvation 1845-1852) had broke out.

5 Industrial Revolution In 1840 Pittsburgh had a population of 23,000 people 10 years later the population had more than doubled

6 Trouble With Growing Cities Overcrowding in cities caused many problems: Dirty streets (people would literally throw trash in the streets) Spread of diseases Cities lacked adequate sewage systems

7 Trouble with Growing Cities Most buildings were made of wood Cities lacked trained firemen

8 Inventions Samuel F.B. Morse created Morse Code Morse Code allowed people to send messages across the country by using a telegraph Messages were sent through wires by electrical currents

10 Recap The Industrial Revolution helped grow the divide between the northern and southern states Factories and industrialization changed the northern states Inventions like the telegraph (morse code) will be used in the Civil War. Lincoln will receive many telegraphs while battles are occuring

Paragraph 2 – Describe two inventions that you use everyday and are important in your life. How do you use them? Why do you use them?
