Introduction 4 Project Period July 1999-2000 4 Surveyed more than 300 Hotel and Motel Properties in 59 counties 4 Extensive search for data on Hotel/Motel Waste Reduction 4 Results will be available through SWIX website by Fall/2000

National Industry Overview 4 51,000 properties with 3.9 million hotel rooms, averaging 64% occupancy, and representing $93.1 billion in sales 4 Employing 1.6 million people full and part- time, paying 20.2 billion in wages and supporting another 7.6 million jobs indirectly 4 Currently the third largest retail industry

Florida Overview 4 Florida Division of Hotels and Restaurants reports: 1013 hotels with 166,432 rooms and 6676 motels with 200,375 rooms 4 The Florida Hotel Motel Association reports 4500 hotels/motels in the State representing 400,000 rooms and employing 850,000 people. The FHMA credits the discrepancy to the inclusion of small 1 and 2 bedroom apartments.

Opportunity/Challenge The Hospitality Industry constitutes a large portion of the commercial/industrial waste stream in most communities and only minimal work has been done to promote waste reduction/prevention in this sector

Florida - FDEP FDEP/EPA Region IV has sponsored the following: 1) 1991 Townsend/Earle Study 2) 1997-98 FDEP H/M Waste Reduction Project 3) 1999-2000 FDEP/SWIX H/M Waste Reduction Survey Project These projects were all co-sponsored by the Florida Hotel/Motel Association (FHMA)

DEFINITION 4 Combination of Pollution Prevention & Recycling initiatives 4 Waste Prevention is a reduction in the amount and/or toxicity of materials entering the waste stream prior to recycling, treatment, or disposal 4 It is a strategy, which calls for business consumers to think first before purchasing any material or service

Case Studies Hyatt - Fisherman’s Wharf, San Francisco 4 Established an active employee and client environmental education program, consisting of bulletin board notices and informational door hangers 4 Donated used linens and uniforms to the Salvation Army and building materials to the City’s homeless task force 4 Saved $26,000/year in disposal fees
