2 US HISTORY - WWI OVERVIEW & 1920’S Objective: Students will be able to analyze U.S. involvement in the war by interpreting guided reading. Purpose: To be introduced to the issues surrounding the world and the United States prior, during, and after World War I and to interpret the overlying causes and consequences. Standard(s): 2.11 & 2.15 Historical Thinking Skill: Analysis & Interpretation. Cause & Consequence.

3 ANNOUNCEMENTS: SEMESTER 2 DISCIPLINE PLAN & PROCEDURES  Use of cellphone / mp3 device: I will grant the use of the cellphone or mp3 device during SPECIFIC segments of the lesson. 1. Warm-up: No! 2. Activity: Foldable’s, in-class work: YES! 3. Lecture Notes, Video Notes, Picture Analysis & Discussion: No! 4. Assessment / Assignment (depends): YES! 5. Closure/Exit Slip: No! Failure to comply with rules or directions WILL result in disciplinary actions.  Classroom Behavior & Participation Update: I will both REWARD and PUNISH Classroom Behavior & Participation with points. I will REWARD based on participation, raising hand, discussion, answering questions, and good behavior. I will PUNISH based on classroom disruption, insubordination, off-task behavior, not following rules / procedures, etc.  www.Remind.com will be used this semester as a tool to allow me to remind YOU when assignments may be due, upcoming tests, and other general things of importance to the class and YOUR education. www.Remind.com This will be a required assignment.  Use of Notebooks: Notebooks will be assigned to each and every student and will be color coded based on classroom period. Notebooks will be retrieved prior to the warm-up and returned after the closure. Notebooks DO NOT need to be taken home. They can stay in the classroom.  Late Policy: Late assignments will result in ½ off after the due date.

4 WARM-UP: CNN STUDENT NEWS Receive Notebook and write NAME & CLASS PERIOD # on the front (if possible) and back. Write down facts as you watch the video. 1 point = 1 correctly written fact. I need to see at least (a minimum of) 5 facts. More facts may earn additional extra-credit points. What I want to see: Ex. The President was in Europe on Thursday. Give a thing, a place, and a time.

5 WARM-UP: QUICK WRITE Has there ever been a time when you have wanted to stay out of a situation or argument but were forced into it? How did you deal with it? How did you react? Write a minimum of a ½ page.

6 ACTIVITY: CHANGES IN AMERICAN LIFE BECAUSE OF/DURING WWI - World War I: The Home Front African Americans Women Immigrants / Aliens Dissidents Powers of the President Food Factory owners who had discriminated against African Americans & Mexican Americans now recruited them. 500,000 A.A.’s joined the Great Migration: migration from south  north for jobs. Men left work to go to war. Led to new opp. for women and minorities. Woman’s Land Army – Jobs on farms. 400,000 women joined the ind. work force. The govt. feared that secret agents might infiltrate or sabotage the U.S. Restrictions placed on immig. Literacy tests for new arrivals. Lever Food & Fuel Control Act: Pres.  Power to manage food prod. Sedition Act – Illegal to stop the sale of Liberty Bonds or to say/write anything “disloyal” about the American govt. Violated 1 st Amend, (Frdm. of Spch.), many okay with it. Rationing – Distributing goods to consumers in a fixed amount. Price Controls – A system of pricing determined by the govt. on the sale of food. Workers / Labor Daylight Saving Time – Turning clocks ahead 1 hr. in Summer; increased daylight & work hrs. Industrial Workers of the World (socialists) gained popularity, but led to mass convictions and vigilantism. Contagious Illness Influenza – “The Flu” – High fever, runny nose, coughing, headache, feeling tired. Trench Foot – Numbing of the foot due to cold and water. Trench Mouth – Advanced gingivitis. Lack of brushing / dental hygiene.

11 POST-LESSON ANNOUNCEMENTS : EXTRA CREDIT & HOMEWORK 1. Receive TEN (10) Extra Credit points if you bring in ONE (1) unopened box of Tissue Paper. Only ONE (1) Per Quarter Per Student.
