Plant Tissue Meristematic Tissue – Involved in growth Dermal Tissue – Outer layer of plant, also secretes the fatty cuticle Vascular Tissue – Xylem: Carries water and minerals from the root of the plant to the leaves. - Phloem: Carries food to all parts of the plant Ground Tissue -Involved in photosynthesis, storage & support -Makes up most of the plant

Roots Usually the first structure to grow out of the seed when it sprouts Mainly take in water and dissolved minerals Anchor the plant Grow as deeps as 50 m and wide as 15m

Stems o Main function is to support the plant’s leaves and reproductive structures o Can also transport water and dissolved minerals o Stems come in many different forms Soft & flexible (annuals) Rigid & fibrous (palm) Sturdy & woody (trees) Covered in bark

Leaves Main function is photosynthesis Petiole attaches stem’s vascular system to leaf’s vascular system Palisade Mesophyll is where photosynthesis happens Spongy Mesophyll is where gas exchange occurs
