History of Full Time Coaching Personnel Started 1987 Colm Bonner Scheme in WIT Part-time in schools in Waterford By 1990 most counties had schools coaches/GPO’s Munster GAA funded 2 positions per county Primary function was to coach in Primary and Secondary Schools

Review of Situation Was important step at the time as we were losing the Primary Sector Realisation that we were only skimming the surface Sometimes only getting to schools once per month Best way forward was to train clubs and schools to become self-suficient

New Positions and Structures Appointment of County Games Managers Appointment of Games Development Administrators in every Division Appointment of Hurling Development Administrators in Limerick City and South Kerry Third Level Officers in all major colleges Part time Post Primary Schools Officers

County Games Managers Roles and Responsibilities Responsible for the implementation of GAA Games Development Policy within a County, by developing and delivering a comprehensive County Games Development Plan on an annual basis with the assistance of the steering groups’ active in the County. The outcome of this work will be an increase in the participation rate and the standards amongst the population in the region

GDA Roles and Responsibilities Responsible for the implementation of GAA Games Development Policy within a region of a County.

Key Tasks of GDA are to organise and coordinate Regular Games Opportunities for all ages Skill Development Initiatives appropriate to age and ability at child, youth and adult level (club and school) A programme of courses and workshops to suit the needs of Coaches, Referees and Administrators Support Initiatives to help identify, recruit and train key personnel in clubs and schools

Reasons why we have not made better use of full time personnel up to now No real knowledge of their roles Afraid that full time people may take over Not enough of them out there Clubs didn’t think they needed help Some of our staff were still only operating as schools coaches

Changed Now A person situated in every Division in the Province Trained to deliver a service to clubs New roles and responsibilities Reporting to full time staff
