Punishments for people who are guilty Probation You remain free in society, but under supervision of a parole officer. In 2000, more than 3.8 million lived on probation. Imprisonment Hard time! The Jail House! The Pen! In 2009, more than 1.9 million people were in prison!

What happens if you are a good prisoner? You might get parole Early release from prison. Can be offered by judges for “good behavior” Usually comes with specific rules Must report to parole officer often Can not travel outside of the country
