2. Cardiovascular System – The Big Ideas
The heart and the blood vessels are the major parts of the cardiovascular system.
The heart works like a pump without us thinking about it, contracting and expanding, to send blood throughout the body.
Blood circulates nutrients and oxygen around the body and removes waste.
Arteries carry blood away from the heart while veins carry blood to the heart.
Arteries and veins branch out into the smallest blood vessels in the body called capillaries.

3. Cardiovascular System – Prior Knowledge
Students will have knowledge of some systems of the body prior to this study. It will help for students to use the Fun-damental to review the Cardiovascular System. It will also help if they are able to:
Explain that the body is made up of systems.
Name some parts of the human body.

4. Cardiovascular System – Common Misconceptions
Blood vessels end at a dead end.
Reality: Blood vessels are connected from end to end allowing blood to flow throughout the body and back to the heart.
The heart is shaped like the one we see on Valentine’s Day.
Reality: The heart is shaped more like an upside down pear.

6. Cardiovascular System – Instructional Ideas
Read the reading passage, The Heart of the Matter.
Show students how to take their pulse.
Then, ask students to take their pulse while sitting.
Instruct students to do jumping jacks for 60 seconds.
Then, ask them to take their pulse again.
Next, ask students to sit for 60 seconds and take their pulse again.
Compare the numbers and discuss how exercise increases the heart rate and how the heart rate decreases with rest after exercise.

7. Cardiovascular System – Instructional Ideas
Watch the Video Passage, Heart and Circulatory System.
Give each student a copy of a map of a metropolitan area in or near your state.
Show students how the large interstates feed into local highways, which then feed into smaller roads.
Ask students to trace the routes with their fingers.
Stop along the way to discuss how this compares to the circulatory system: arteries feed into smaller arteries which feed into capillaries which feed into veins which then feed into larger and larger veins until they reach the heart.
