The need for a new CRIS In 2008 the universities started expressing the need for a new CRIS METIS was not completely up-to-date and had several functional and technical restrictions SURF was asked to coordinate the activities whose initial aim was to explore the market and compare METIS with commercial vendor systems 12/09/2011Marc Dupuis @ euroCRIS 6

For more than twenty years, collaboration within SURF has led to products and services that the participating institutions could not have achieved on their own. 12/09/2011 8

Relevance and impact of the CRIS programme At the executive level in the HEIs the new CRIS is regarded as the most important eResearch development In fact, the CRIS programme is the first community cloud initiative within Dutch higher education Thus the impact of the CRIS programme is strong: if it fails, can other community cloud projects be successful? 12/09/2011Marc Dupuis @ euroCRIS 16
