NAFA 2011 Williamsburg, VA Ultraviolet Energy Presented by Sam Guzman American Ultraviolet Company
2
NAFA 2011 - Basic explanation of UV and how it works - Safety aspects of working with UVC - Benefits of using UV technology: -Economic -Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)
3
NAFA 2011 - Types of applications and equipment -Static vs. dynamic -Standard and High density arrays -Lamps and ballasts -Bare lamps, fixtures, and racks
4
NAFA 2011 ASHRAE-Recent developments -Standards for surface and air disinfection -Degradation of materials commonly found in an AHU -New chapter for equipment - Programs for the next AHR show
5
NAFA 2011 Underwriters Laboratory Recent interest in UV technology What it may mean to manufacturers and end users Questions

NAFA 2011
10
Why add UV equipment to an air-handler? Adding UV saves you money -No more coil cleaning man hours -No more coil cleaning chemical costs -No more downtime for critical areas -Maintains and restores AHU efficiency
11
NAFA 2011 A dirty coil means: -reduced heat transfer -narrowed space between fins -loss of surface area due to impaction All of these make the AHU run longer and harder to bring the space to the desired temperature

NAFA 2011 McGill University 2 Year Double Blind Study published in The Lancet McGill University 2 Year Double Blind Study published in The Lancet 99% reduction of microbial and endotoxin concentrations 40% reduction in respiratory symptoms 20% reduction in all symptoms McGill University 2 Year Double Blind Study published in The Lancet

NAFA 2011 ASHRAE Position Document on Airborne Infectious Diseases Approved by ASHRAE Board of Directors lists UV as the top three control strategies to be considered for future research projects June 24, 2009 lists UV as the top three control strategies to be considered for future research projects UV not only can save money it can save lives!

NAFA 2011 Ballasts / Transformers Electronic Magnetic
16
NAFA 2011 Types of UV applications in an AHU Static Dynamic -target does not move -air rushes by -time is 24/7 -time is 1 second or less -standard array can destroy - high density array used to “hard to kill” contaminants destroy common airborne “hard to kill” contaminants destroy common airborne “easy to kill” contaminants “easy to kill” contaminants
