Your about to see a slide show of “Mars” By: Lindsey and Haley!
2
MARS! The Red Planet By Lindsey Provencher and Haley Rainier!
3
Main Differences between Mars and Earth! Mar’s solar day is 39 minutes and 35.244 seconds longer than Earth’s day! One earth year is 365 days and one mars year is 687 days!
4
Mars’ Atmosphere! Made up mostly of Carbon dioxide (95%) Nitrogen 3% argon 1.6% Liquid water can’t exist because the Atmosphere is too thin. Only a little bit of water can exist on the thin clouds, but there is signs of ancient floods
5
Materials Mars is made of! Outer surface-basalt that was brought to the surface by ancient volcanoes The volcanoes put iron oxide dust with a fine powder consistency on the surface That dust gives the planet its red color The core is mostly iron and 17% sulfur The core is surrounded by the mantle which is made of silicates
6
Mars compared to the Earth and Sun! Mars is 230 million km from the sun Mars is 35 million miles from the Earth Mars and Earth are both terrestrial planets, which means they have the same makeup (core, mantle, crust)
7
Mars’ color! Red The iron oxide on the surface makes it red The iron oxide creates a very powdery red dust
8
Name of Mars! Mars is also known as the red planet Mars, the name came from the Roman’s god of war. The blood-like color is related to the Roman’s god of war The Egyptians named mars “ Her Desher” meaning the “red one”
9
Mars’ moons! Two moons- Phobos and Deimos Deimos is the smaller moon ( 15x12x11) km Orbits around Mars every 30 hours Small, lumpy, and heavily cratered Phobos is the larger moon (27x22x18) km Orbits around mars 3 times a day Phobos is on a collision course with mars
10
Travel time: Earth to Mars! Approximately 214 Earth days or a little over 7 months It would take less time if we had technology to carry enough fuel to travel directly to Mars You would have to slow down once you take off, so you could enter Martian orbit You could get to Mars faster with a nuclear-powered rocket
11
Mars’ Surface! Mars’ surface is similar to Earth’s moon Has a reddish color which comes from the iron oxide in the soil The surface also holds Magnesium, Chloride, Potassium, and Sodium The soil could grow organisms such as asparagus
12
Mars’ Geographic features! Mars has Olympus Mon- highest mountain in the solar system Mars has Valles Marineris- the largest canyon Mars has polar ice caps Mars has canyons and volcanoes
13
Exploration of Mars! 1964 to 1970, Mariner was sent, it was the first successful space craft We have sent space crafts to reach Mars and explore it Sent exploration rovers- Mars Rover in 2003
14
Discovery of Mars ! There is not a known person who discovered Mars Astronomers such as Aristotle saw Mars and classified it as a star The Astronomers could see Mars because it is so bright 1659- Christian Huygens discovered features of Mars He thought there was life on Mars, but it was actually water canals.
15
Temperature on Mars! Extremely cold temperature Average surface temperature is -63 degrees Celsius can fall as low as 140 degrees Celsius and as high as 20 degrees Celsius The temperature on Mars is colder than Earth temperature, because Mars is farther from the sun and Mars has a thinner atmosphere so it can’t hold heat
16
Mars time! A Mars day is only 39 minutes and 35 seconds longer than Earth’s day One Earth year = 365 Earth days One Mars year = 687 Earth days
17
Mars’ Seasons! Mars’ seasons are very similar to Earth’s Mars’ seasons are twice as long because Mars has significantly longer years Seasons are similar because Mars has an axial tilt of 25.19 degrees which is close to Earth’s tilt
18
Rotation! It takes Mars 687 Earth days to rotate around the sun. It takes Mars 669 Martian days to rotate around the sun. Martian days are also called Sols
19
The Fun facts of Mars!! ;D Mars’ mass is 6.42x10 to the 23 rd power kilograms Mars’ volume is 163,115,609,799 cubic kilometers Mars is 230,000,000 kilometers from the sun Mars’ diameter is 6787 kilometers Mars has no rings
20
Human life on Mars! Mars does not support human life, but it may have billions of years ago Evidence of human life has been found Evidence included: traces of water, and the proper setting for life The only living things that could possibly survive on Mars now are micro-organisms in the soil and dust
21
Interesting Facts! A day in Mars is equal to 24.6 Earth hours If you weigh 100 lbs. on Earth, your weight on Mars would be 38 lbs. (multiply your actual weight by 0.38) The orbital speed of Mars is 24.2 Kilometers per second Mars is the God of War in Roman mythology (Ares)
