2 Spain had lost all of its colonies in the Western Hemisphere except for Cuba and Puerto Rico. Jose Marti- Urged Cubans to fight for their freedom and made preparations to return to his homeland where he as killed and deemed a martyr.

3 Why did America enter the fight? 1- General Valeriano Weyler put rebels in Spanish camps where 1/3 died of starvation or disease. 2- Many considered the Cuban Revolution to be like the American Revolution. 3- New York Journal and New York World Yellow Journalism- scandalous stories with shocking illustrations. (Yellow Kid)‏

4 President McKinley was hesitant to being war…but… The de Lome Letter- Ridiculed McKinley for being “weak and catering to the rabble.” The Journal called it the worst insult to the U.S. in its history. The U.S.S. Maine- Ship sent to Havana to protect American lives and poverty mysteriously blew up and killed 260 sailors. Rally Cry- Remember the Maine! McKinley demanded that Spain give Cuba independence

6 Four Months of War- Two Fronts War in Philippines- Roosevelt had given orders long before that if Spain attacked, then war should begin in the Philippines. He gave the order to George Dewey- The Commander of the U.S. Navy’s Asiatic Squadron. The U.S. had steel hull and iron ships with superior weaponry. Battle of Manila Bay- 400 Spaniards were injured or killed NO America deaths.

7 The War in Cuba Teller Amendment- Once Cuba freed itself from Spanish rule, the U.S. would leave the government and control of the Island to its people. Set backs- Woolen Uniforms, mess pans from Civil War

8 Battle of San Juan Hill Rough Riders- A regiment organized by Theodore Roosevelt after he left his navy post. Foot Soldiers. Buffalo Soldiers- African Americans from the 9 th and 10 th Calvary started the charge. On July 1, a U.S. division seized the hill at El Caney and 8,000 U.S. fought for control of Kettle and San Juan Hills. Roosevelt got a Medal of Honor

9 Consequences of the War Spain gave up all claims to Cuba and cede Puerto Rico and Guam. Gave up Philippines for 20 million 2,000 U.S. soldiers died from Yellow Fever U.S. spent 250 million in War Costs U.S. moved into an imperialist nation.

10 Annexing the Philippines Some Americans didn’t want overseas territories. Philippines are located on the route to China Colored Citizens of Boston Philippines annexed on February 6, 1899.
