A New Take on an Old Chinese Proverb… Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day while creating a desire for more. Teach a man to fish and you give him the means to satisfy that desire for a lifetime. 3
4
We must provide instructors with some ready-to-use media so that they may experience how engaged the digital natives become in order to create a desire in the instructors for more. One strategy for achieving this is C 3 … 4
5
C 3 – Engagement Strategy for Digital Natives. ◦ Connect - Use technology/multimedia environment familiar to the students to establish attention connection. ◦ Content - Embed lesson focus in connect media. ◦ Curiosity - Encourage evaluation, synthesis, and further investigation and learning. 5
6
Connect – It is all about relevant media with digital natives. ◦ Custom video shorts, animation/speedwriting. ◦ Vignettes available from an ever-increasing list of sites. ◦ In-house video production. ◦ Examples of long-term help for math: ◦ Math Fella Does Real Math series ◦ Pursintajj Zoo series ◦ Build a database similar to BrainPOP.com, but to a higher level student and with more character/venue diversity.BrainPOP.com 6
7
Content – The message in the media. ◦ Maintain lesson focus while using new medium. ◦ Prioritize production by TEKS-based performance levels. ◦ Productions will foster Bloom’s l evel 3 (Application) questions. ◦ Use ‘connection’ to build environment more receptive to communicating content. ◦ Instructors become familiar with using “student friendly” media for communicating ideas and challenges. 7
8
Curiosity – Spur interest with the media message. ◦ Engage natives to use media tools to further address topics. ◦ Involve students in establishing a database of visits to/from industry professionals to include online (Skype) interviews and real-time online discussions. ◦ Tie activity and lesson to life applications to include interviews, visits, and readings from professionals in relevant industries. ◦ Encourage and support student experimentation with native media in their presentations and projects. 8
9
Obstacles in current technology assimilation methodology: ◦ Obtaining and deploying the technology. ◦ The current generation of primary/secondary students are native to a technological/multi-media environment which is foreign to the instructors. ◦ Providing instructors with access to the technology with limited training is not altering the learning environment enough to significantly connect with the students in their culture. 9
10
Solution: ◦ Infuse Us will provide the instructors with a comfortable media environment in which to connect with the digital natives through: Infuse Us Production of ready-for-use student environment (multi-media) items. Development of larger scale programs to address the ongoing STEM-based needs. Injection of relevant industry professional interviews available for instructor’s use. 10
11
Benefits of Infuse Us: ◦ Focus on production of ready-to-use media tools that support instructor need to integrate digital native media into classroom. ◦ Engage industry involvement and messaging to emphasize the relevance of the content being taught. ◦ Production of tools and programs that can ultimately be posted for use by all as well as potential inclusion in online course development. ◦ Candidate for grant funding from many sources to include STEM-related and private education foundations. 11
