1 Naming chemicals Name chemical substances from their formula and write simple word equations

2 Ideas: do not copy You need to know some simple names and formulas
On the next couple of pages are some simple elements that you need to be able to name. We then move onto how ions are formed and how they work to make up compounds. We then move onto the more complicated ions and finally onto the formulas.

3 Common elements Si P S Cl K Ca Cu Zn Pb Silicon Phosphorus Sulfur
Chlorine Potassium Calcium Copper Zinc lead H Li C N O F Na Mg Al Hydrogen Lithium Carbon Nitrogen Oxygen Fluorine Sodium Magnesium Aluminium

4 Common ions Chloride Oxide Hydroxide Carbonate Sulfate Nitrate
Hydrogen carbonate Cl - O 2- OH - CO32- SO42- NO3- HCO3-

5 How do ions form? Ions are formed when an element either gains electrons (negative ion, anion) or when it loses electrons (positive ion, cation) Elements can only lose or gain electrons. The number of protons and neutrons remains the same. Remember: in an element (atom) the number of protons equals the number of electrons. In an ion, the number of protons stays the same and electrons can change.

6 Which atoms lose electrons?
Metals lose electrons to become positively charged. Move onto the board to show them more examples.

7 Which atoms gain electrons?
Non-metals gain electrons to become negatively charged.

8 Ions on brainpop.

9 Putting it together: formulas
Sodium hydroxide Magnesium hydroxide Copper hydroxide Zinc oxide Iron oxide Magnesium oxide Sodium chloride Copper chloride Potassium chloride NaOH Mg(OH)2 Cu(OH)2 ZnO Fe2 O3 MgO NaCl CuCl2 KCl

10 CuSO4 MgSO4 Na2 SO4 Zn(NO3)2 KNO3 Pb(NO3)2 CaCO3 MgCO3 CuCO3 NaHCO3 Copper sulfate Magnesium sulfate Sodium sulfate Zinc nitrate Potassium nitrate Lead nitrate Calcium carbonate Magnesium carbonate Copper carbonate Sodium hydrogen carbonate

11 HOMEWORK Homework: read pg 69 describing reactions and special skill
Questions and answers: # 6, 9, 10 pg 71 Due: Thurs 13/3 (this week) If you do not attempt the homework, you will be spending Friday lunchtime this week completing it with me.
