HIGHER PE 19/8/14

INSTRUCTIONS 1 handout between 2. Copy the following information into your jotters. If finished work, can start/continue with Homework due this Thursday.

Physical (Fitness) Factor - SPEED Speed –The ability for the performer to move the body, or part of the body, as quickly as possible. –This usually involves exercising 'anaerobically' (without the use of oxygen). The body uses stored energy for fuel, however this increases the volume of lactic acid in the muscle post performance. –Speed can be categorised as 'whole body speed' or 'upper/lower body speed'.

Physical (Fitness) Factor - SPEED Speed is important for many activities. It allows you to; Generate enough whole body speed to come first in 100m event (Athletics). Make penetrative runs into opponents defence and to support attack before opposition recover into defensive position. Stay close to opponent, denying them space, while their team is in possession. Get arm into position to strike next shot in Table-Tennis. Also helps generate power required for performing next shot. Help generate power in next movement/skill.

Gathering Data on Speed We use Standardised Tests to gather data outwith the activity! 30 metre Speed Test Used 400m track and coned a 30m section with Teacher shouted ‘go’ and started the stopwatch I ran as fast as possible from start to finish of 30m section As I sprinted, my helper timed my performance. This performance was recorded as my baseline result to improve on in future re-testing. Accurate and reliable data and can be compared to later test Can compare to national average

Mental Factor - Anxiety Definition An unpleasant state of inner turmoil, often accompanied by nervous behaviour, restlessness, fatigue, concentration problems and muscular tension. These affect performance in a negative manner, and need to be managed or controlled to aid effective performance. Anxiety, takes many different forms but within sport; You may feel as though you are choking You want to run away or you cannot move your body in ways that you want. In short, you freeze when the moment matters.

Anxiety – Effect on Performance When the physical symptoms of anxiety are too great, they may seriously interfere with your ability to compete. Left untreated, it becomes a vicious cycle of negative thoughts and feelings followed by poor or inhibited performance. E.g. In Football, if a match is still tied at the end of extra time, players may have high anxiety levels during the resulting penalty shootout. Pressure is on the players to score from their team, from the fans who want the team to be successful and the individual player who wants to win.

Gathering Data on Anxiety - Questionnaires A Questionnaire gathers information on the mental or emotional state of a performer prior to beginning a skill development programme or prior to competition. The results from the Questionnaire may impact some of the approaches the performer adopts within the development programme or affect how they prepare prior to competition. Performers use a Questionnaire called the ‘Sport Competition Anxiety Test (SCAT)’ to gather information on their level of Anxiety at a given moment.
