1 E ARLY C HILDHOOD S ERVICES Preparing the Environment Project

2 D ESIGN A D AYCARE You will be assigned two details: an age group and the number of children at your daycare. With these details design the layout of a daycare that would accommodate the children. You will need to use both the “development” chapter and the “preparing the environment” chapter to help you make decisions. You will use poster paper and markers for your floor plan. You will also submit Appendix A, Appendix B, Appendix C and Appendix D plus a ½ page explanation of your activity areas.

3 T HINGS TO C ONSIDER : Don’t draw in markers until you are confident. First draw in pencil. Title your floor plan Use color Be neat! Your appendixes should be typed up and look good. Work hard every day. You have 3 classes. After that point, you will need to come in during noon to finish up. Value: 25 marks

4 P HYSICAL SPACE You will need to place the following: Entrance Director’s office Isolation area (if you feel it’s necessary) Kitchen Staff room Bathrooms (how many will you have?) Classroom (in the next step, you will put different activity areas in the classroom) Also be sure to draw in windows

5 S TORAGE Decide which of the following things you will need, and draw them into your room Chairs Tables Storage units Lockers or cubbies On a separate piece of paper (which you will title Appendix A), tell me how many of each you have, how big they are, how you might arrange them, decorate them, and any details that you would consider when placing these items.

6 C OLOR C HOICES A PPENDIX B On a separate piece of paper, called Appendix B, detail the colors you have chosen for each room and why. If you are using more than one color in a particular room, be sure to tell me (and why).

7 P ROGRAM G OALS : A PPENDIX C Use the notes from the development chapter and come up with 6 program goals, goals you have in mind because of the children’s age. Be sure to have 2 program goals for their cognitive development, 2 for their social/emotional development and 2 for their physical development. Use the “How Goals are Supported by the Environment” chart handout as a sample. Write yours in the same way (in a chart), and don’t borrow too much from the sample.

8 A CTIVITY A REAS Choose 5 of the following areas a) draw them into the classroom space on your floor plan and b) create Appendix D c) write me ½ page telling me why you chose these 5 areas, over the others; why you felt they were most important. On Appendix D be sure that you explain what, exactly, you will have in each area. Use the Classroom Area chart as an example and make your own chart (don’t borrow too much from this one).
